World Peace Day — officially The International Day of Peace — is celebrated annually on September 21st. It is dedicated to world peace, specifically to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. Hopefully, it will become the occasion for a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access, that is to stop a war for a while, in order for sick, hurt, hungry people and especially kids to be treated. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening. Click on the button below to visit the official U.N. Like the first day in any place, the first day of class can be a bit awkward situation. Unknown faces both for the teacher and the students, full of curiosity and expectations for the new school year, are trying to get to know each other and create a warmer atmosphere in the classroom. In this case, an "Ice Breaking Game" would certainly do the job. This year I used two new for me Ice breakers - "Spider Web" and "Roll the Dice, Break the Ice". Spider Web You will need a ball of yarn. Students stand up or sit in a circle. One student ties the loose end of yarn around a finger and gives us a piece of information about himself (his name when younger learners are involved and more complex information when older learners participate). Then he chooses a teammate and passes the ball of yarn to him. Now it's his turn to tell us something about himself. Play continues this way until every student has a loop on his finger. If they succeed at this mission, they’ve created a great work of art! Roll the Dice, Break the IceYou will need two dice, and a list of questions or incomplete sentences. I played this game with my older students. After I created some questions to correspond with each number on the die, I asked students to roll the dice and complete the sentence that corresponded with that number. After two rounds of rolling the dice, I let them choose and complete the sentence they liked most.
I'm Mrs. Fotini and as sad as I am to say goodbye to summer, I am so much more excited to say hello to all of you! After two years of absence, due to my pregnancy and the birth of my second son, I'm very happy to be joining our school family again!
I think you are really going to enjoy this year. We will be learning many new things, we will be having lots of fun and you will be making many new friends. Please talk to me if you have something to share or if you don't understand something, or if you are ever upset. I think you' ll find I'm a good listener. I look forward to working with you this school year! Sincerely Mrs. Fotini |
